At the beginning of the last decade, Lydia Venieri began creating a series of paintings on paper on the life of Lor George Gordon Byron (1788-1824). This series captivated her so much that by 2017, she had created more than 720 works. She studied historical sources, revisited facts, searched for clues and figures directly or indirectly related to the life and work of the central figure of her research, and devoted herself to expressing the story in her way. Venieri's numerous works composed a narrative and an original visual biography of the important poet, writer, and symbol of European Romanticism, who loved Greece and breathed his last breath in Messolonghi in 1824. This project was named Byronic Codex by the artist, and in essence, they are her version of elements and conditions that are key in approaching life, work, position, struggle, and Byron's end. This large body of work, a complete artistic proposal of its creator, creates a mosaic that constitutes a painting narrative so dense that it could lead to a comic book or a film of this personality of the world of intellect and literature that by his choice was fatally connected with Greece.

Lydia Venieri's rich narrative discourse - although faithfully following the aesthetics and atmosphere of the time in which the story unfolds - is illustrated with modern and alternating visual writing and with great freedom. The idea of "painting" a film was consolidated and became a request.

In the context of the actions for the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the Greek Revolution, the Municipality of Athens embraced the idea of creating an original film, which is not only an artistic treatise but also the submission of the personal reading of history by a modern Greek artist with an international career.

We considered that the presentation of the narrative visual portrait in the form of a film would be incomplete if it were not framed by the other "protagonist," the works of Lydia Venieri. Thus, the projection at the Municipality Gallery in Metaxourgeio is embedded within the many works that compose it.

The Culture of Athens funded Venieri's film and installation. This program is part of the Municipality of Athen's 3-year plan to upgrade, highlight and integrate the cultural fabric of Athens, and support artists, particularly during the pandemic.

Ο Δήμος Αθηναίων, στο πλαίσιο των δράσεων για την επέτειο των 200 χρόνων από την έναρξη της ελληνικής Επανάστασης, αγκάλιασε την ιδέα δημιουργίας μιας πρωτότυπης ταινίας, με θέμα τη ζωή και το έργο του εμβληματικού φιλέλληνα ποιητή, Λόρδου Βύρωνα.

Η Λυδία Βενιέρη ξεκίνησε στις αρχές της προηγούμενης δεκαετίας τη δημιουργία μιας σειράς ζωγραφικών έργων σε χαρτί, με θέμα τη ζωή του Λόρδου Βύρωνα (George Gordon Byron 1788-1824). Η σειρά αυτή την συνεπήρε τόσο, ώστε να δημιουργήσει μέχρι το 2017 πάνω από 720 έργα. Μελέτησε ιστορικές πήγες, αναψηλάφησε γεγονότα, έψαξε για στοιχεία και πρόσωπα που άμεσα ή έμμεσα συνδέονταν με τη ζωή και το έργο της κεντρικής φιγούρας της έρευνάς της και αφοσιώθηκε στην απόδοση της ιστορίας με το δικό της τρόπο. Τα έργα πλήθαιναν συνθέτοντας ένα αφήγημα και μια πρωτότυπη εικαστική βιογραφία του σημαντικού ποιητή, συγγραφέα και συμβόλου του ευρωπαϊκού Ρομαντισμού, που αγάπησε την Ελλάδα και άφησε την τελευταία του πνοή στο Μεσολόγγι το 1824. Το σύνολο τους ονομάστηκε από την ίδια την καλλιτέχνιδα Βυρωνικός Κώδιξ, γιατί στην ουσία η συγκέντρωση τους, διαμορφώνει ενότητες που αφορούν στο έργο, τις θέσεις, τον αγώνα και το τέλος του Βύρωνα. Η σύνθεσή τους αποτελεί τη δική της εκδοχή για τα γεγονότα και τις συνθήκες ζωής και θανάτου του Βύρωνα και ταυτόχρονα προτείνουν κλειδιά προσέγγισης και ανάγνωσής τους.

Ο Βυρωνικός Κώδιξ είναι μια καλλιτεχνική πραγματεία, αλλά ταυτόχρονα και κατάθεση της postmortem σχέσης μεταξύ ενός ιστορικού όσο και συμβολικού προσώπου παγκόσμιας αναγνώρισης και ενός σύγχρονου Έλληνα καλλιτέχνη με διεθνή καριέρα. Πρόκειται για ένα μωσαϊκό, που εκτός από μια πλήρη εικαστική πρόταση της δημιουργού του, συνιστά ένα ζωγραφικό αφήγημα τόσο πυκνό, που αβίαστα οδήγησε στην ιδέα μιας ταινίας, για μια προσωπικότητα της παγκόσμιας διανόησης και λογοτεχνίας που συνδέθηκε μοιραία, αλλά από επιλογή, με την Ελλάδα. Ο μεστός αφηγηματικός λόγος της Λυδίας Βενιέρη, αν και ακολουθεί πιστά την ατμόσφαιρα και την αισθητική της εποχής στην οποία εκτυλίσσεται η ιστορία, εικονοποιείται με μια σύγχρονη εικαστική γραφή, με μεγάλη ελευθερία.

Η παρουσίαση της αφηγηματικής εικαστικής προσωπογραφίας με τη μορφή ταινίας, θεωρήσαμε ότι δεν θα ήταν πλήρης αν δεν πλαισιώνονταν και από τον έτερο «πρωταγωνιστή» της ταινίας, τη ζωγραφική Λυδίας Βενιέρη. Έτσι, η προβολή στη Δημοτική Πινακοθήκη στο Μεταξουργείο πλαισιώθηκε από ένα σημαντικό αριθμό εκ των έργων που τη συνθέτουν.
