Although Newstead was unhabitable, Byron and his mother moved to live in nearby Nottingham in August 1798. The residence formed by the ruins of Newstead Abbey adjoined by a large house served as an inspiration for Byron’s later Gothic themes. This contributed to his belief that layers of history are part of objects in life.
