In 1785, just before the marriage of Catherine Gordon of the Gight to Captain Byron, the herons suddenly deserted the castle’s heronry, where they had nested for over five centuries. As foretold Catherine was soon forced to sell off the castle to the Earl of Aberdeen to pay her husband’s debts.
