Catherines Loneliness

2017

Catherine was an 18 years old heiress who lived with the only survivor of a large family, her grandmother Margaret Duff. She occupied herself reading, dreaming in a democratic revolutionary vivant temper. Her grandfather Alexander drowned in 1760, her sister Abercromby died in 1777, her father George Gordon of Gight drowned in Bath Canal in 1779, her sister Margaret died in 1780, and her mother Innes died in 1782. To preserve the family name, her parents introduced a clause in their will that required their daughter’s husband to take the Gordon name as his own, which the handsome captain John Byron did.
